NAP Strategic Plan
In 2007, the National Association of Parliamentarians adopted a strategic plan to drive the association's activities in the coming years, establishing specific, measurable goals through 2010. The plan includes goals for each of NAP's three strategic areas.
Education
NAP's education program includes the development and publication of reference materials, study guides, and other educational resources that are published by NAP and distributed through the NAP store. The association’s goal for education is to reach 12,000 users annually after three years. Specifically, over the next three years, to:
- Develop six web-based training programs that will reach 6,000 people.
- Develop partnerships with 15 total associations and educational institutions, through developing materials, joint events, etc.
- Develop tracking methods for NAP's various internal events, including the biennial convention and National Training Conference.
- Develop 12 educational programs for units yearly.
Marketing
NAP has grown largely through word of mouth as members of various non-profit organizations, school boards, city councils, churches, homeowners' associations, and other organizations observed members with strong meeting management skills and asked how they, too, could learn to lead or participate more effectively in decision-making meetings. More recently, NAP's Web site has provided hundreds of thousands of visitors from around the world easy access to information and resources related to effective meeting practices.
NAP's marketing goals reflect a continued shift in the organization's finances, from one heavily dependent on member support through annual dues to one sustained by the products and services it provides: In three years, gross annual revenues will be $500,000 of which $200,000 is dues-based and $300,000 is non-dues revenues. These non-dues revenues (through the sale of products and services to members and to the general public) will support the sustained growth of the association and increase its ability to reach those who can most strongly benefit from more fair, effective meetings.
Credentialing
In the belief that any professional service industry is strengthened by a credentialing program from a reputable organization, NAP established two levels of credentials for parliamentarians. Registered Parliamentarians® have successfully demonstrated advanced knowledge of effective meeting procedure based on an examination that is much more rigorous than the basic examination completed by all NAP members. Professional Registered Parliamentarians® have also demonstrated that they have the skills and knowledge needed to provide effective, professional parliamentary services.
NAP's credentialing goal seeks to increase the number of credentialed parliamentarians available to help educate and provide parliamentary services to organizations and individuals around the world: Have 1,000 credentialed members in the next three years, and explore the development of an international credential or "internationalize" NAP’s current credentials.
