WAITING FOR ROBERT’S 11th EDITION: ANTICIPATING CHANGE

Change! Yes change, is the special order of the day for the educational agenda. Here is what our members and visitors have to look forward to for 2011 - 2012:

September 20, 2011: Resistance to Change: Who says a member cannot alter the way an organization operates? What are the rights and responsibilities of members to affect positive change(s)? What causes resistance to changes in meeting procedures as described in RONR? The proposed 2011 NAP bylaws amendments to be voted on in St. Petersburg, FL, that were sent to NAP members, may provide specific examples.

October 18: Changed Your Mind? Part 1: Chapter IX in Robert’s RONR is entitled MOTIONS THAT BRING A QUESTION AGAIN BEFORE THE ASSEMBLY. Particular attention is given to the motions to RECONSIDER and RESCIND. Why are those motions important? When are they used? What is an example of a special form of the motion to RECONSIDER.

November 15: Changes in Robert’s 11th Edition: What are they? Were there any changes you hoped to see that were not addressed in the new edition? What will be the practical application of the changes?

December 20: Making Motions Matter: Is part of a teamwork game where members practice their parliamentary skills by following written instructions (for a change). They will make motions appropriate to the information included on the piece of paper selected by each contestant.

January 17, 2012: The Changing Financial Picture: Why is financial accountability so important in organizations? When should audits be done? What constitutes a conflict of interest where financial matters are concerned?.

February 21: Changed Your Mind? Part 2: Some motions that deal with change have their own mnemonic: “Rah, Rah, Decision Time Again” stands for Reconsider, Rescind, Discharge a Committee, Take from the Table and Amend Something Previously Adopted. Reconsider and Rescind were in October’s lesson. The others have application here. Discharge a Committee.Take From the Table. Amend Something Previously Adopted. Under what circumstances are these motions most effectively used?
